Full setup guide
Follow these steps carefully — each action protects access to your crypto. This guide is written for the Model T and Model One devices; specifics may vary slightly by model.
Step-by-step
- Connect your device: Use the included USB cable. For mobile setups, use an OTG adapter if required. When powered, the device screen will display a welcome message.
- Open Trezor Suite: Visit trezor.io/start and download the official application. Always verify the domain and certificate in your browser — phishing sites can mimic the design.
- Firmware check: The Suite will check firmware. If the device is uninitialized, the app will guide you through installing the latest signed firmware. Only accept firmware installs from the official app.
- Create a new wallet: Choose 'Create new' in Trezor Suite. The device will prompt you to choose a PIN and will then display a recovery seed. Write the seed on the recovery card — do not photograph or store it digitally.
- Verify and finish: Trezor may ask you to confirm parts of the seed back on the device. Complete the verification to ensure your backup is correct. After verification, you can add accounts (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) in the Suite.
Using your wallet
Receiving funds is straightforward — share only your public address. For sending, always verify the transaction details on the Trezor device screen (amount and recipient). This local verification prevents malware on your computer from tricking you into wrong transactions.
Security practices
The following practices will significantly reduce the risk of loss or theft of your keys:
- Never enter your recovery seed anywhere except on your Trezor device during recovery.
- Do not store the seed digitally (no photos, screenshots, or cloud storage).
- Use a strong, unique PIN and consider a passphrase for additional protection (advanced).
- Keep firmware up to date; updates patch vulnerabilities and add features.
Advanced: Passphrase & Shamir
A passphrase protects accounts with an extra, user-chosen word or phrase layered on top of your seed. Use this if you want plausible deniability or multiple hidden wallets. If supported, Trezor also supports Shamir Backup (SLIP-0039) for splitting your recovery seed into multiple pieces — store pieces separately.
Restoring from seed
If you need to recover your wallet, choose 'Recover wallet' in Trezor Suite and follow the prompts. Enter the seed only on the device — the Suite will never ask you to paste a seed into the app.
Checklist before first transaction
- Device shows a valid firmware signature and model name.
- You created and verified a recovery seed physically on paper.
- You set a PIN and optionally a passphrase.
- You created accounts and tested a small incoming transaction.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Trezor without internet?
Yes — your private keys never leave the device. You can sign transactions offline and broadcast them later using a separate online machine or services that accept signed transactions.
What if I lose my device?
Recover your funds using the recovery seed on a new device or compatible wallet. If you lose both the device and the seed, funds cannot be recovered.
Is it safe to buy a used Trezor?
Only if you can perform a full factory reset and firmware reinstall, and if the seller did not tamper with the package. Best practice is always to buy from an authorized reseller or directly from trezor.io.
